Exhibit Project Director: Ramsay Liem 프로젝트 감독: 임램지

Ramsay Liem is a professor of psychology at Boston College. He directs the "Korean American Memories of the Korean War" oral history project and teaches in the Asian American Studies Program as well as the psychology department. He has spoken widely about the oral history work and is preparing a book manuscript based on his research. He is the founder of several Korean American community organizations and member of and consultant to numerous Asian American organizations. For this exhibit, Prof. Liem researched and edited the oral histories included in the exhibit. He is the Project Director for the exhibit and responsible for fundraising together with Deann Borshay and Yul-san Liem.

임램지는 보스턴칼리지의 심리학 교수로 재직하고 있다. 그는 “재미교포들이 기억하는 한국전쟁”이라는 제목의 구술사 프로젝트를 감독하면서, 심리학 및 아시아계 미국학 연구를 가르치고 있다. 구술사 프로젝트에 대해 널리 강연했으며 이 연구를 바탕으로 책을 저술 중이다. 여러 재미교포사회 단체들을 설립에 관여했고 많은 아시안계 미국인 단체의 회원이자 고문으로 일하고 있다. 임교수는 이 전시회에 포함된 모든 구술사를 수집하고 편집했다. 또한 이 전시회의 프로젝트 감독으로서 강옥진(디앤보르셰이)과 임율산과 함께 모금을 책임지고 있다.

Exhibit Historian: Ji-Yeon Yuh 역사자문위원: 여지연

Ji-Yeon Yuh is an associate professor of history and director of the Asian American Studies Program at Northwestern University. She is currently writing a book on diasporic Koreans based on oral histories conducted in the United States, China, South Korea, and Japan. She is the only U.S. historian exploring the Korean War from the perspective of diaspora through the medium of oral history. Prof. Yuh serves as historical consultant and wrote the historical text for the exhibit as well as the accompanying catalog.

여지연은 노스웨스턴 대학의 역사학과 부교수이자 아시아계 미국 연구 프로그램의 책임자로 재직하고 있다. 현재 미국과 중국, 한국, 그리고 일본에서 채록한 구술사를 바탕으로 한인 디아스포라에 대한 책을 집필 중이다. 구술사를 통해 디아스포라의 시각으로 한국전쟁을 탐구하는 미국 유일의 현존 역사가이기도 하다. 여교수는 이 전시회의 역사자문위원으로서 전시회의 캐털로그와 전시회를 위한 역사 교재를 집필했다.

Exhibit Artists 참가 예술가

Deann Borshay 강옥진 (디앤 보르셰이)

Deann Borshay is the Producer/Director of the Emmy Award-nominated documentary, FIRST PERSON PLURAL, which was broadcast nationally on PBS as part of the acclaimed documentary series, Point of View (POV). FIRST PERSON PLURAL had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2000 and received numerous awards. Ms. Borshay is also past Executive Director for the National Asian American Telecommunications Association. For this exhibit, she created a video installation about Korean orphans and a biographical clip of one woman's reunion with family in North Korea. She also shared in the preparation and design of oral history presentations (e.g. video and audio), and in fundraising.

강옥진(디앤 보르셰이)은 에미상 후보에 오른 다큐멘터리 <<일인칭복수>>의 감독이다. <<일인칭복수>>는 ‘관점’이라는 제목으로 널리 알려진 PBS 다큐멘터리 시리즈를 통해 미국 전역에 방송되기도 했다. <<일인칭복수>>는 2000년 1월에 선댄스영화제에서 초연된 뒤 많은 상을 수상했다. 전국 아시아계 미국인 통신협회의 이사를 역임한 바 있는 그녀는 이 전시회를 위해 한국의 고아들에 대한 영상물 및 북한에 사는 가족과 한 여성의 재회에 대한 전기적인 영상물을 창작하였다. 그녀는 또한 이 전시회를 위해 구술사의 제시를 위한 준비와 영상 및 음성 디자인, 그리고 모금에 참여했다.

Injoo Whang 황인주

Injoo Whang received her BFA from Hong-Ik University in Seoul, South Korea and her MFA (Fine Arts) from the Parsons School of Design. She has exhibited her work in Korea and the United States and describes her work as using "humble" or "fragile" materials to magnify the paradoxical sense of making something out of nothing. In her most recent work she used torn up paper and vinyl curtain metaphorically healing wounds and divisions in life through the creative process. Ms. Whang created "A Girl with a Tank" for the exhibit, an installation inspired by paradoxical memories of the war. She also collaborated on several other pieces.

황인주는 서울 홍익대학교에서 미술 전공으로 학사학위를 받고 미국 파슨스 디자인학교에서 같은 전공으로 석사학위를 받았다. 한국과 미국에서 전시회를 연 바 있는 그녀는 ‘보잘 것 없고 연약한’ 재료를 사용해 무에서 유를 창조하는 역설을 강조하고자 노력하고 있다. 근작에서는 찢어진 종이와 비닐 커튼을 사용하여 삶 속의 상처와 분열을 창조적 과정을 통해 비유적으로 치유하고자 하고 있다. 이 전시회를 위해서는 전쟁에 대한 모순적 기억들에 착안하여 “소녀와 탱크”를 창작, 출품했고 전시된 다른 여러 편의 작품에도 공동창작자로 참여하였다.

Ji-Young Yoo 유지영

Ji-Young Yoo received her BFA from Hong Ik University in South Korea, her MFA from City College of New York, and her MA in Media Studies from The New School in New York. She has shown in numerous exhibits in Korea and the United States and organized the group exhibition "Diaspora, Difference, Division: New Works" in New York City. She worked as a miniature builder for the Korean War Memorial Museum in Korea and includes issues of Diaspora and Korean culture among her interests. Ms. Yoo created three multi-media installations for this exhibit, shared in producing several others, and serves as the Exhibit Designer.

유지영은 한국 홍익 대학교에서 미술로 학사학위를 받은 뒤, 뉴욕 시티 칼리지에서 같은 전공으로 석사 학위를, 그리고 뉴욕에 있는 뉴스쿨에서 매체학으로 석사 학위를 받았다. 한국과 미국에서 많은 전시회에 참여하였고, 뉴욕에서 “디아스포라, 차이, 분열: 신작들”이라는 제목의 전시회를 개최한 바 있다. 한국에 있는 한국전쟁 기념관에서 소형 모형 제작자로 일했으며 디아스포라와 한국 문화에 관한 주제에 관심을 갖고 작품활동을 하고 있다. 이 전시회를 위해서는 세개의 멀티미디어 설치물을 창작, 출품했고 다른 참여예술가들과 함께 다른 설치물의 창작에도 참여했다. 전시회의 디자이너이기도 하다.

Yul-san Liem 임율산

Yul-san Liem received her BFA from the School of the Visual Arts in New York City. She is a community artist and activist whose paintings and installations treat themes of war, division and resistance. For this exhibit Ms. Liem designed and built the "Bridge of Return" and "Our Puzzle", both interactive installations that invite viewers to become participants in the process of remembering, reconciling and creating. She also shared in producing several other STILL PRESENT PASTS pieces and in designing the exhibit's graphic materials. She serves as the project's Administrative Coordinator.

임율산은 뉴욕시에 있는 시각예술학교에서 미술 전공으로 학사학위를 받았다. 전쟁과 분단, 그리고 저항이라는 주제를 다루는 그림과 설치물들을 창작하는 공동체 미술가 겸 활동가이다. 그녀는 이 전시회를 위해 기억하고 화해하고 창조하는 과정에 관객들이 함께 참여하도록 유도하는, “귀환의 다리”와 “우리의 퍼즐”이라는 제목의 대화형 설치물들을 고안하고 직접 만들었다. 그녀는 또한 ‘어제 안에 오늘’에 전시된 다른 여러 작품들을 공동으로 창작했고, 전시회를 위한 시각적 자료들을 공동디자인했다. 이 프로젝트의 관리 책임자이기도 하다.

Erica Cho 조 에리카

Erica Cho is a visual artist and filmmaker based in Los Angeles. Her work has exhibited at institutions such as The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Japanese American National Musuem, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, RedCat Gallery, The National Museum of Women in the Arts and in festivals worldwide, such as Optica, Festival Internacional de Vídeo Arte, The London Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, Expresión en Corto International Film Festival and VCFilmFest: The Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. She earned her MFA from UC Irvine and BFA from Penn State University, was honored as one of Out Magazine’s Out100 for her remarkable contributions to LGBTQ culture, and has received awards from Creative Capital, The Third Wave Foundation, and the California Community Foundation. Cho was also honored as the Robert Motherwell endowed visual art residency fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Massachusetts and has collaborated extensively with local Los Angeles community organizations such as The Heart Project, Self Help Graphics, and the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs Youth Arts and Education. In Still Present Pasts, Cho has contributed the stop-motion animation "Our Cosmos Our Chaos", an experimental look at the Korean War exploring the connections between mystical practice and political consciousness through Korea's turbulent history and ancient animistic traditions. Sukjong Hong 홍석종

Sukjong Hong received her BA in architecture from Yale University. She is currently a Masters candidate at Cornell University's Department of City and Regional Planning. Her research interests are in gender and development, especially in the context of food security, migration, and economic transition in Asia. These interests were spurred by the farmer movement in South Korea and the sustained food and energy shortages experienced by people in the DPRK. She has worked most recently with immigrant youth in Queens, New York, on issues of immigration, education, and the myth of the American Dream using media as a tool for empowerment and dialogue. She contributed "My Mother Used to Tell Me" to STILL PRESENT PASTS, an installation based on one woman's oral history that expresses kinship with and compassion for the "enemy."

홍석종은 예일 대학교에서 건축학 학사 학위를 받았으며 현재 코넬 대학교 도시지역계획학과 석사과정에서 수학중이다. 성차와 발달의 문제를 특히 아시아의 식량 안보 및 이동 그리고 경제변화의 맥락에서 살펴보는 데 연구의 촛점을 두고 있다. 한국의 농민 운동과 북한의 식량과 에너지 부족에 자극받아 그같은 연구를 하게 되었다. 최근에 권리쟁취와 대화의 도구로 미디어를 사용하여 이민, 교육, 그리고 미국의 꿈의 신화라는 이슈를 중심으로 뉴욕 퀸즈에 있는 이민가정 청소년들과 함께 일한 바 있다. 그녀는 ‘적’에 대한 친근감과 동정심을 표현하는 한 여성의 구술사를 바탕으로 한 “어머니는 항상 말씀하시곤 했지”라는 제목의 설치물을 ‘어제 안에 오늘’에 출품하였다.

Young Soon Min 영용순

Young Soon Min is an accomplished visual artist and Chair of the Studio Art Department at UC Irvine. She is a recipient of a Visual Artists Fellowship Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Ranging in media from photography to installations, her work has been exhibited in the U.S. and abroad, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art/New York City, Camerawork Gallery/London, Kumho Museum/Seoul, Fourth Baguio Art Festival/Philippines, Museum Folkwang/Germany, and in two Havana Biennials/Cuba. Her work includes numerous pieces incorporating themes of division and the lasting imprint of war on Koreans and Korean Americans. She has contributed "Defining Moments," an embodied chronology of significant events relating to the artist's personal and political history. (Six 20x16" silver gelatin prints with etched glass).

영용순은 뛰어난 시각 예술가로서 캘리포니아 대학교 어바인에서 스튜디오 미술과 과장으로 재직중이다. 국립예술기금으로부터 시각미술가 펠로십 그랜트를 받은 바 있다. 사진에서 설치물까지 다양한 매체를 사용한 그녀의 작품들은 로스앤젤스 카운티 미술관, 뉴욕시 소재 현대미술관, 런던의 캐머라워크 갤러리, 서울의 금호 미술관, 필리핀의 제4 바구이오 예술축제, 독일의 포크방 박물관, 그리고 쿠바의 하바나 비엔날레를 포함해 미국 국내와 해외에서 다양하게 전시되어 왔다. 분단의 주제와 전쟁이 한국인과 재미동포들에게 지속적으로 미치고 있는 영향이라는 주제를 담고 있는 수많은 작품들을 발표했다. 자신의 개인적이고 정치적인 역사들과 관련된 중요한 사건들을 표현하고 있는 “결정적 순간들”이라는 제목의 작품을 전시회에 출품하였다.

6.25; History Beneath the Skin 6.25: 우리 안에 흐르는 역사

Performer 연기자: Grace M. Cho 조 그레이스

Grace M. Cho is a biracial Korean American who was born in Pusan, Korea and moved to the U.S. as a young child. She is author of the book, Haunting the Korean Diaspora: Shame, Secrecy, and the Forgotten War. Both her academic and performance work deals with how trauma travels across boundaries of time and space. She has performed several pieces on trauma and Diaspora.

조 그레이스는 부산에서 혼혈아로 태어나 어린 나이에 미국으로 이민 온 한국계 미국인이다. “한국계 디아스포라를 따라다니는 유령: 수치심과 비밀과 잊혀진 전쟁” 이라는 제목의 책을 출간했다. 그녀의 학문적 연구와 공연물들은 모두 트라우마가 시간과 공간의 경계를 어떻게 넘나드는지를 다루고 있다. 트라우마와 디아스포라의 관한 여러 공연물들을 발표하였다.

Performer 연기자: Hosu Kim 김호수

Hosu Kim is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Department for Study of Culture and Society, Drake University. As a native of Korea, she came to the United States in the early 1990s. She is currently working on the book, A Virtual Mothering (working title), a cultural critique of the emergent figure of the Korean birthmother in popular media. As a performing sociologist, Hosu Kim is also interested in the ways in which performance generates affective relationships with audience and readers.

김호수는 현재 드레이크 대학교 문화와사회학과 객원 부교수로 있다. 한국에서 태어나 1990년대 초에 미국으로 왔다. 그녀는 현재 “가상의 어머니 노릇: 대중매체에 나타난 한국의 생모라는 인물유형에 대한 문화비평 (가제)”이라는 제목의 책을 집필중이다. 공연사회학자로써 공연을 통해 방청객 및 독자들과 정서적인 관계를 맺는 양상에 대해서도 관심을 갖고 있다.

Performer 연기자: Hyun Lee 이현정

Hyun Lee emigrated from Korea to the United States with her family in 1980. She is a social justice activist and is formerly the Director of the Chinatown Justice Project of CAAAV Organizing Asian Communities, a racial justice organization in New York City. In this position she organized immigrant youth, low-income tenants, and street vendors in New York City's Chinatown. She is currently studying acupuncture.

이현정은 1980년에 가족과 함께 한국에서 미국으로 이민왔다. 그녀는 사회 정의를 위한 활동에 종사하는 활동가로서 뉴욕시 인종 차별 관련 정의 단체인 차이나타운 정의 프로젝트인 CAAAV 아시아계 공동체 조직 프로젝트의 책임자를 지낸 바 있다. 그 책임자로 있는 동안 뉴욕시 차이나타운 안에 있는 이민 청소년들, 저소득층 세입자들, 그리고 가두 판매인들의 조직 등의 활동을 하였다 그녀는 현재 침술사가 되기 위한 공부를 하고 있다.

Stage Director: Carolina McNeely 무대감독: 캐롤리나 맥닐리

Carolina McNeely is an actor, director, and educator. She is delighted to be directing the original play "6.25: History Beneath the Skin." In addition to her directorial work, Carolina performs in New York and regional theatre, film, and television; writes and adapts for the stage; teaches acting workshops at The City University of New York; and coaches privately. Having studied theatre and film in the U.S., Asia, and Europe, she completed her M.F.A. at the University of Washington in Seattle.

캐롤리나 맥닐리는 연기자이자 감독이며 교육자로서 ‘6.25: 우리 안에 흐르는 역사’라는 공연물을 감독했다. 그녀는 감독일 이외에도 뉴욕 및 타지역의 연극과 영화, 텔레비전에서 연기자로 일하는 한편 극본을 쓰고 각색하며, 뉴욕시립대학에서 연기워크샵을 가르치면서 개인 연기지도도 하고 있다. 연극과 영화를 미국과 아시아, 그리고 유럽에서 공부한 그녀는 워싱턴 주립 대학교 시애틀에서 석사학위를 받았다.

Language Consultant: Seung-Hee Jeon 언어 자문위원: 전승희

Seung-Hee Jeon is a Senior Editor of Asia: a Magazine of Asian Literature and a Fellow at the Korea Institute, Harvard University. She received her Ph.D. in English Literature from Seoul National University and more recently in Comparative Literature from Harvard University. Her recent dissertation entitled “Rethinking Truth after ‘the Age of Extremes’: An Analysis of the Chronotope of Anamnesis in Autobiographical Narratives by Pak, Klüger, and Kogawa” examines a dynamic concept of truth embodied in memoirs by women survivors of the Korean War, the Japanese Internment, and the Holocaust. An accomplished translator and literary critic, she published many articles on Korean and English literature and translated and co-translated contemporary Asian and English literature and literary theories. Currently finishing a book tentatively entitled Writing War: Trauma and Truth after ‘the Age of Extremes’, she is also working on the autobiographical representations of postwar Korean history as well as the changing dynamics in cultural discourses surrounding women’s sexuality in Korea. She is a founding member and former co-president of Korean Women’s Studies Institute, a founding member of Boston Korea Friendship Association, and a former board member of Transition House, New England’s first shelter for battered women. For ‘Still Present Pasts,” Dr. Jeon served as linguistic consultant for the exhibit and catalogue, and provided translation in Korean and English.

전승희는 아시아 문학 계간지인 <아시아>의 편집위원이자 하버드대학 한국학연구소 연구원으로 있다. 서울대에서 영문학 박사학위를, 하버드대학에서 비교문학 박사학위를 받았다. 비교문학 박사학위 논문인 “’극단의 시대’ 이후 진실을 다시 생각한다: 박완서, 클루거, 고가와의 자전적 글에 나타나 있는 기억의 크로노토프 분석”은 한국전쟁과 일본인 억류수용, 그리고 유태인 학살의 여성생존자들이 쓴 수기에 담긴 역동적 진실의 개념을 검토하고 있다. 번역문학가이자 문학평론가인 그녀는 한국문학과 영문학에 관한 논문을 다수 발표한 바 있고, 아시아 문학 및 영문학과 문학이론의 번역자이기도 하다. 현재 “전쟁에 관해 쓰기: ‘극단의 시대’ 이후 트라우마와 진실”이라는 제목의 책의 저술을 마무리짓고 있는 그녀는 한국전쟁 후 역사를 재현하고 있는 자전적 문학작품에 관한 책 및 한국 여성의 성을 둘러싼 문화적 담론의 변화를 살펴보는 책을 준비중이다. 한국여성연구소의 창립멤버이자 공동대표를 지냈고, 보스턴 코리아 친선모임의 창립멤버이며, 매맞는 여성을 위한 뉴잉글랜드 지역 최초의 쉼터인 트랜지션하우스의 이사를 지내기도 했다. “어제 안에 오늘”을 위해 전시회와 캐털로그의 언어자문위원으로 참여했으며, 한글과 영문의 이중언어 번역을 제공했다.

Technology Coordinator: Young Sul 정보공학 자문위원: 설영

Young Sul is a Systems Administrator at Harvard University. He received a BA in Economics from Trinity College, Hartford. He has worked in the Technology industry for the past 15 years in both the private and academic sectors. He also maintains his own mailing list on Korean affairs, and supports and advises non-profit organizations in the care and feeding of their technical infrastructure. He currently lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

설영은 하트포드 소재 트리니티 칼리지에서 경제학 학사학위를 받은 뒤 현재 하버드 대학교의 시스템 관리자로 일하고 있다. 지난 15년간 사적 영역과 대학의 정보공학 부문에서 일해 왔으며, 또한 한국 관련 온라인 그룹을 관리하면서, 여러 비영리 단체들의 기술부문 기본구조 구축과 유지에 자문하고 있다. 현재 매사추세츠 주 캠브리지에 거주하고 있다.

Study Guide Writer: Wol-san Liem 학습보조자료 저자: 임월산

Wol-san Liem is a scholar and activist who has lived and worked in New York City and Seoul, South Korea. She received her B.A. from Columbia University and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the History Department at New York University. Her research focuses on U.S. cultural policy in South Korea during the Korean War and post-war years and its relation to discourses of modernization and Korean American immigration. She has worked as a high school teacher in New York City schools and as the International Solidarity Director for the Migrants Trade Union in South Korea. She developed and wrote the Teacher and Student study guides for Still Present Pasts.

임월산은 뉴욕과 서울에 거주하면서 활동하고 있는 학자이자 활동가이다. 콜롬비아 대학교에서 학사학위를 받은 뒤 현재 뉴욕 대학교 역사학과에서 박사 과정을 밟고 있다. 연구의 촛점은 한국 전쟁 중이나 이후 시기 한국에서의 미국 문화정책, 그리고 그 정책과 현대화 담론 및 재미동포의 이민의 상호관계이다. 그녀는 뉴욕시에서 고등학교 교사로 일한 바 있으며, 한국내 이주노동자 노동조합의 국제연대 담당 책임자로 일하였다. 그녀는 ‘어제 안에 오늘’을 위해 교사와 학생을 위한 학습보조자료를 개발하고 집필했다.
